MLS has played a significant role in the development of soccer in North America, attracting international talent and fostering the growth of the sport domestically, and globally.

What is the structure of the MLS league?

The MLS league consists of 29 teams divided into two divisions. 15 teams play in the Eastern Conference during the season, including 13 franchises from the eastern United States and two franchises from Canada. On the other hand, 14 teams play in the Western Conference.

MLS teams play a total of 34 matches with 17 home and 17 away matches. Eastern Conference teams play each other twice and one match each against six teams from other conferences. In the Western Conference, teams must play each other twice, with one or two additional matches against teams from their own conference. On the other hand, Western teams play one match each against six or seven teams from other conferences as well.

There are separate point tables for the two conferences, but there is one table for the two conferences as well. The top nine teams from each division will advance to the playoffs, where the top team of the combined table gets the Supporters Shield.

The eighth and ninth teams in each division of the conference play in the wild card match. The two winners join the top seven teams in their respective divisions. Eight teams in both divisions participate in a best-of-three knockout match in the first round of the playoffs. After the Conference Semi-Finals and Conference Finals, the two teams from the two divisions reached the MLS Cup Final. The MLS League champion is determined at the end of that final.
